Question:

The length of a rectangle is twice its breadth and its area is 288 cm2. Find the dimensions of the rectangle.

Solution:

Let the length and breadth of the rectangle be $2 x \mathrm{~m}$ and $x \mathrm{~m}$, respectively.

According to the question:

$2 x \times x=288$

$\Rightarrow 2 x^{2}=288$

$\Rightarrow x^{2}=144$

$\Rightarrow x=12$ or $x=-12$

$\Rightarrow x=12 \quad(\because x$ cannot be negative $)$

$\therefore$ Length $=2 \times 12=24 \mathrm{~m}$

Breadth $=12 \mathrm{~m}$
