HOW TO USE THE JOSAA OPENING AND CLOSING RANK TOOL

Finding colleges through eSaral's JoSAA tool takes under a minute:

Step 1 — Select Your Exam Choose either JEE Main (for NITs, IIITs, GFTIs) or JEE Advanced (for IITs). The tool filters the college list accordingly.

Step 2 — Enter Your Rank Type in your All India Rank (CRL) for JEE Advanced, or your JEE Main All India Rank. For category-specific results, the tool uses your category rank automatically once you select your category.

Step 3 — Choose Your Category Select your reservation category: OPEN, OPEN (PwD), OBC-NCL, OBC-NCL (PwD), SC, SC (PwD), ST, ST (PwD), EWS, or EWS (PwD). This filters the results to show only the seats you are eligible for.

Step 4 — Select Seat Type: Pick Gender-Neutral or Female-Only (including Supernumerary) based on your eligibility. Female-Only seats often have lower closing ranks — female candidates should check both.

Step 5 — View and Filter Your College List Click "Find My Colleges" to see all IITs, NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs where your rank falls within the 2025 opening-to-closing rank window. Use the search bar to filter by college name or branch.

Step 6 — Build Your JoSAA Choice List.t Sort by your preference — best college and branch at the top — and use this as the basis for your JoSAA 2026 choice filling. Log in to the official JoSAA portal (josaa.nic.in) to submit your final choices during the designated window.

WHAT IS JOSAA COUNSELLING?

JoSAA — Joint Seat Allocation Authority — is the single centralised counselling body that manages admissions to:

  • 23 IITs (Indian Institutes of Technology) — via JEE Advanced rank
  • 31 NITs (National Institutes of Technology) — via JEE Main rank
  • 26 IIITs (Indian Institutes of Information Technology) — via JEE Main rank
  • 33 GFTIs (Government Funded Technical Institutes) — via JEE Main rank

JoSAA 2026 will conduct 5–6 rounds of seat allotment. After each round, students can accept their allotted seat, choose to wait for the next round (if upgrading), or withdraw. The opening and closing ranks from previous years (especially the final round) are the most important data points for planning your choice list.

JOSAA CHOICE FILLING STRATEGY — HOW TO FILL YOUR PREFERENCES

The biggest mistake students make in JoSAA is not filling enough choices or filling them in the wrong order. Here's what you need to know:

Always Fill Best to Good — Never Good to Best. Your first choice should be the absolute best college+branch combination you could realistically get. JoSAA will offer you the highest preference for which your rank qualifies. If you put NIT Trichy CSE at rank 1 and IIT Roorkee Mechanical at rank 2, and your rank qualifies for bot, you'll be allotted NIT Trichy CSE. That's why the ordering is critical.

The eSaral Recommended Order: Fill choices in this priority sequence:

  1. Best IIT + Best Branch your rank can reach (even if it's a stretch)
  2. Next best IIT + same branch
  3. Best IIT + next branch you'd accept
  4. Top NIT + CSE / preferred branch
  5. Continue downward across IITs → NITs → IIITs → GFTIs

Fill in as Many Choices as possible. JoSAA allows up to 25,000+ choices. There's no penalty for filling more. Students who fill only 10–15 choices risk being left without a seat if their top choices don't come through.

Check Both Gender-Neutral and Female-Only Seats (For Female Candidates). Female-only (supernumerary) seats at IITs and NITs have significantly lower closing ranks in many branches. A female candidate with rank 2,500 might not get IIT Roorkee Electrical in an ender-neutral category, but could get it under the female-only category. Always include both seat types in your choice list.

Use the Final Round Closing Rank, Not Round 1. Round 1 closing ranks are always lower (more competitive) because fewer seats are filled. The final round closing rank is the actual cutoff — and that's exactly what eSaral's tool shows.

UNDERSTANDING OPENING VS CLOSING RANK IN JOSAA

Two key numbers govern every JoSAA seat:

Opening Rank — The rank of the first student allotted a seat in a particular college-branch-category-gender combination in that round. This is typically the best (lowest) rank in that group.

Closing Rank — The rank of the last student allotted a seat. This is the most important number for planning — if your rank is equal to or better than the closing rank, you are eligible for that seat.

Example:

  • IIT Bombay | CSE | OPEN | Gender-Neutral | Opening: 1 | Closing: 68
  • This means: Only students with a  CRL rank between 1 and 68 received this seat in 2025.
  • If your rank is 75, you cannot get IIT Bombay CSE under the OPEN category, gender-neutral, but you might qualify under OBC-NCL or via the female-only seat.

Why Closing Ranks Change Every Year: JoSAA closing ranks shift based on: total number of JEE aspirants, difficulty of that year's paper, distribution of ranks among categories, new seats added or removed, and student choice preferences. Ranks can shift by 5–15% in either direction between years. Use eSaral's tool for guidance, but always have a buffer of 10–20% when shortlisting.

Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers to common questions.

What is JoSAA and who conducts it?

JoSAA (Joint Seat Allocation Authority) is a joint body set up by the Ministry of Education, IITs, and NTA to centrally manage seat allocation for IITs (via JEE Advanced rank) and NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs (via JEE Main rank). It conducts 5–6 rounds of counselling each year, typically starting in June after JEE Advanced results.

What is the difference between opening rank and closing rank in JoSAA?

The opening rank is the best (lowest number) rank that received a particular seat in a given round. The closing rank is the last (highest number) rank that received that seat. For planning purposes, compare your rank to the closing rank — if your rank is lower or equal, you were eligible for that seat in that year.

Which rank should I enter — CRL or category rank?

Enter your CRL (Common Rank List) — the overall all-India rank. The tool uses your selected category to automatically show relevant opening and closing ranks. For JEE Advanced, this is your AIR. For JEE Main, this is your All India Rank.

How many choices should I fill in JoSAA 2026?

Fill as many as possible — at least 50–100 choices. JoSAA has no upper limit on choice filling, and there is no penalty for including more options. Students who fill only a handful of choices risk missing out on good allotments if their top preferences go to higher-ranked students.

Do female candidates have an advantage in JoSAA?

Yes. All IITs offer additional supernumerary seats exclusively for female candidates (typically 20% extra seats). The closing rank for female-only seats is almost always higher (less competitive) than gender-neutral seats in the same branch. Female candidates should include both seat types in their choice list.
