JEE Advanced 2026 Eligibility Criteria

Understanding the JEE Advanced eligibility criteria is the first step before applying. Students who do not meet even one of the following conditions are ineligible — verify all criteria before the registration window opens.

Performance in JEE Main 2026

You must rank among the top 2,50,000 candidates (across all categories) in JEE Main 2026. This is the primary gateway. Your JEE Main score determines whether you even get to sit for JEE Advanced.

Age Limit

Candidates born on or after October 1, 2001, are eligible (General/OBC-NCL/EWS). For SC, ST, and PwD candidates, the age relaxation gives a birthdate cutoff of October 1, 1996.

Number of Attempts

A student can attempt JEE Advanced a maximum of 2 times in 2 consecutive years. If you appeared for JEE Advanced 2025, 2026 is your final attempt — there is no third chance, regardless of the reason.

Qualification in Class 12 (or equivalent)

You must have first appeared in Class 12 (or equivalent) in either 2025 or 2026. Students who appeared for the first time in 2024 or earlier are not eligible for JEE Advanced 2026.

Earlier Admission to IITs

If you were previously admitted to any IIT (regardless of whether you took admission or not, including preparatory courses), you are not eligible to appear for JEE Advanced 2026.

Category JEE Main Cutoff Rank (Approx.) Percentage of Seats in IIT
General (CRL) Top 1,07,500 ~40.5%
EWS Top 25,000 ~10%
OBC-NCL Top 67,500 ~27%
SC Top 37,500 ~15%
ST Top 12,500 ~7.5%
Expert Tip by Saransh Gupta, IIT Bombay AIR-41

Most students fixate on "making the Advanced cutoff" from JEE Main. That's the wrong mindset. Your JEE Main rank gets you the right to appear — nothing more. The IIT seat is won or lost entirely on how you perform in those 6 hours of JEE Advanced. Treat JEE Main as the qualifier, and save your peak preparation energy for JEE Advanced itself.

JEE Advanced 2026 Exam Pattern and Structure

JEE Advanced has a unique and evolving pattern. Unlike JEE Main, the number of questions and total marks vary year to year. Both papers are compulsory. Missing either paper means no rank — even a brilliant performance in one paper counts for nothing if the other is skipped.

Feature Paper 1 Paper 2
Shift Morning (9:00 AM – 12:00 PM) Afternoon (2:30 PM – 5:30 PM)
Duration 3 Hours 3 Hours
Subjects Physics, Chemistry, Maths Physics, Chemistry, Maths
Mode Computer-Based (CBT) Computer-Based (CBT)
Language English / Hindi English / Hindi
PwD Duration 4 Hours 4 Hours

What Question Types Appear in JEE Advanced?

JEE Advanced tests conceptual depth through three types of questions. Each type has a different marking scheme, which makes strategy critical:

Question Type Description Difficulty
MCQ (One or More Correct) Classic JEE Advanced format — may have 1, 2, 3, or 4 correct options. Partial marking applies. Hardest
Numerical Answer Type Enter a number directly. No options shown. No negative marking. Rewards precision. Medium
Matching List Type Match entries from two lists. Only 1 correct combination. Medium
Single Correct MCQ Traditional single-correct option format. Negative marking applies. Standard

JEE Advanced Marking Scheme: What You Must Know

The marking scheme is one of the most misunderstood parts of JEE Advanced. Knowing exactly how marks are awarded — and deducted — can be the difference between a rank inside the top 500 and outside the top 5,000.

MCQ — One or More Correct Options

# Marks Condition
1 +4 All correct options marked, no wrong option selected
2 +3 / +2 / +1 Partial credit — some correct options marked, zero wrong options marked
3 −2 Any incorrect option selected

Numerical Answer Type Questions

# Marks Condition
1 +3 Correct numerical answer
2 0 Wrong answer — no penalty
3 0 Unattempted — no penalty

Matching List & Single Correct MCQ

# Marks Condition
1 +3 Correct answer
2 −1 Wrong answer
3 0 Unattempted — no penalty

Expert Tip by NK Gupta Sir, IIT Bombay —eSaral Faculty

On the multi-correct MCQs, never guess. Guessing wrong costs you 2 marks. Leaving it blank costs you zero. If you are 70% sure about some options but uncertain about one, consider attempting only the options you are sure about — partial marks still apply as long as you mark no wrong option. This single strategy can protect 10–15 marks in an exam where a 1 mark difference can shift your rank by hundreds.

JEE Advanced 2026 Syllabus: Subject-Wise Breakdown

The JEE Advanced syllabus is deeper and broader than the JEE Main. It is not based on NCERT alone — it requires genuine conceptual mastery and the ability to apply ideas in unfamiliar contexts. Visit the JEE Main Syllabus page to compare with the JEE Main.

Subject High-Weightage Topics Difficulty vs JEE Main
Physics Mechanics, Electrostatics, Electromagnetism, Optics, Modern Physics, Waves & Sound, Thermodynamics Much Harder
Chemistry Physical Chemistry (Thermodynamics, Electrochemistry, Equilibrium), Organic Reactions & Mechanisms, Coordination Chemistry, Inorganic (NCERT deep), p-block Harder
Mathematics Calculus (Limits, Continuity, Differentiation, Integration), Coordinate Geometry, Algebra, Probability, Vectors & 3D Geometry, Complex Numbers, Matrices. Much Harder

Which Topics Are Exclusively in JEE Advanced?

Several topics that appear in JEE Advanced do not feature in JEE Main:

  • Physics: Thermal expansion in depth, properties of matter (elasticity, viscosity, surface tension), sound wave superposition, Doppler effect edge cases
  • Chemistry: Electrochemistry (cell EMF derivations), nuclear chemistry in depth, extraction of metals, qualitative inorganic analysis
  • Mathematics: Advanced integration techniques (reduction formulas, Leibniz rule), advanced probability (conditional chains), conic sections at a deeper level

How to Prepare for JEE Advanced 2026: IIT Faculty Strategy

JEE Advanced preparation is not about studying more — it is about studying differently. Students who crack JEE Advanced in the top 1,000 do not study 18 hours a day. They study 8–10 hours with extraordinary focus, guided by a system that builds concepts first and speed second.

What is the Best Study Schedule for JEE Advanced?

A proven 6-day weekly schedule that eSaral faculty recommends for JEE Advanced aspirants in the final phase:

Day Morning (4 hrs) Afternoon (3 hrs) Evening (2 hrs)
Mon Physics — Concepts + Solved Examples Physics — Advanced Problems Revision & Doubt Clearing
Tue Mathematics — Calculus / Algebra Maths — Problem Sets Error Log Review
Wed Chemistry — Physical Chemistry Chemistry — Organic Mechanisms Flashcard & Formula Revision
Thu Physics + Maths Mixed Practice Weak Chapter Deep Dive Concept Map Recap
Fri Chemistry (Inorganic + Organic) Previous Year Questions Speed Practice (Numericals)
Sat Full Mock Test (Paper 1 + Paper 2) — Simulate exam conditions exactly
Sun Mock Analysis + Weak Area Targeted Study + Rest

Subject-Wise Preparation Tips

  1.
Physics: Build a "physics intuition" first. Before solving a problem, always draw a diagram, identify forces, and write energy equations before plugging in numbers. JEE Advanced Physics rewards those who think physically, not those who remember formulas. Prioritise Mechanics, Electrodynamics, and Optics.
  2.
Mathematics: Integration and Calculus form the backbone of JEE Advanced Maths. Practise integration by parts, substitution, and partial fractions until they become reflexive. For Algebra, focus on Probability and Complex Numbers — these areas separate top-500 ranks from top-5000.
  3.
Chemistry: Organic Chemistry must be understood mechanistically — do not memorise reactions blindly. For Physical Chemistry, treat it like applied Maths. For Inorganic, your NCERT must be read 4–5 times — almost every reaction question in JEE Advanced is traceable to a concept in NCERT Class 11 or 12.
  4.
Previous Year Papers: Solve the last 10 years of JEE Advanced question papers under strict exam conditions. Do not look at solutions before making a genuine attempt. Paper analysis after each mock is as important as the mock itself.
  5.
Doubt Resolution: Every unresolved doubt compounds over time. Use a structured doubt-solving system — log every doubt in a notebook, attempt it yourself, then escalate to a teacher within 24 hours. eSaral's 5-layer doubt-solving system ensures no doubt stays unresolved beyond a day.

How Is JEE Advanced Different from JEE Main?

JEE Advanced Counselling: JoSAA Process Explained

Qualifying for JEE Advanced does not automatically give you an IIT seat. The seat allocation is handled entirely by JoSAA (Joint Seat Allocation Authority) — a separate authority from the IITs. All IIT seat allocation, IISc, and participating institute admissions go through JoSAA.

How Does JoSAA Seat Allocation Work?

  1.
Register on the JoSAA portal after the JEE Advanced results are declared. Use your JEE Advanced roll number and rank.
  2.
Fill preferences — choose your preferred institute, branch, and programme combinations in order of preference. You can list hundreds of choices.
  3.
Multiple rounds of seat allotment happen over 5–6 rounds. In each round, seats are allocated based on your rank and the choices you have filled.
  4.
Accept the seat and pay the seat acceptance fee to lock your allotment. You can choose to upgrade in subsequent rounds while holding your current seat.
  5.
Document verification and reporting to the allotted institute completes the admission process.
Rank Range (General) Institutes Accessible Top Branch Options
1 – 500 IIT Bombay, Delhi, Madras (any branch) CS, Electrical, Mechanical
501 – 1500 IIT Bombay / Delhi (non-CS branches), IIT Kanpur CS Electrical, Engineering Physics, Chemical

Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers to common questions.

What is JEE Advanced and who conducts it?

JEE Advanced is the second stage of IIT JEE, conducted annually by one of the seven IITs on a rotational basis. It is the sole entrance exam for undergraduate admission to all 23 IITs and IISc. For 2026, IIT Madras is the conducting authority. Only the top 2,50,000 candidates from JEE Main are eligible to appear.

How many attempts are allowed for JEE Advanced?

A candidate can attempt JEE Advanced a maximum of 2 times, and only in 2 consecutive years. This means if you attempt in 2025, your second and final attempt is in 2026. There is no provision for a third attempt under any circumstance. This makes every attempt extremely valuable — preparation must be thorough before sitting the exam.

Is JEE Advanced harder than JEE Main?

Yes — JEE Advanced is significantly harder than JEE Main. JEE Main tests knowledge at a NCERT-plus level, while JEE Advanced requires deep conceptual understanding and multi-step problem solving. Questions in JEE Advanced often combine two or three concepts in unexpected ways. The exam also features multi-correct MCQs and numerical types with no options shown, raising the difficulty further.

What are the eligibility criteria for JEE Advanced 2026?

To be eligible for JEE Advanced 2026, you must: rank among the top 2,50,000 in JEE Main 2026, be born on or after October 1 2001 (General/OBC), have first appeared in Class 12 in 2025 or 2026, have used at most 1 of your 2 lifetime attempts, and not have been previously admitted to any IIT. All five conditions must be met simultaneously.

Is eSaral good for JEE Advanced preparation?

What is the JEE Advanced cut-off percentage for IITs?

For General category candidates, the qualifying cut-off requires a minimum of 10% marks in each subject and 35% aggregate. For SC/ST/PwD, the minimum is 5% per subject and 17.5% aggregate. The actual cut-off changes each year based on difficulty level and is officially declared with the result by the conducting IIT.
