Every year, the National Testing Agency arranges the JEE Main exams, which are online computer-based tests for students who want to join undergraduate courses in India's top engineering institutes. There are two papers in these exams. Sections, Subjects included, and Marking pattern of JEE Mains
JEE Main Exam Pattern 2026- Paper 1
Exam Mode: The JEE Main 2026 exam will be conducted in a computer-based test mode, which means you will take the test on a computer.
Exam Duration: The total duration of the exam will be 3 hours. However, for persons with benchmark disabilities, the exam duration will be 4 hours.
Subjects: The exam will cover three subjects: Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics.
Total Number of Questions: There will be a total of 90 questions in the exam, but you need to answer only 75 questions. Each subject will have 20 multiple-choice questions (MCQs) and 10 numerical questions, out of which you need to answer 5 numerical questions.
Type of Questions: The exam will have two types of questions. The first type is objective questions, where you will have 4 options to choose from, and only one option will be correct. The second type is numerical questions, where you need to calculate the answer and enter it.
Marking Scheme: For the MCQs, you will be awarded 4 marks for every correct answer, and 1 mark will be deducted for every incorrect answer. For the numerical questions, the marking scheme is the same as that of MCQs.
Maximum Marks: The maximum marks for the JEE Main 2026 exam will be 300.
Medium of Paper: The exam can be taken in various languages, including English, Hindi, Assamese, Bengali, Gujarati, Kannada, Marathi, Malayalam, Odia, Punjabi, Tamil, Telugu, and Urdu.
JEE Main Exam Pattern 2026 - Paper 2
Mode of Examination: The JEE Main 2026 exam will be conducted in a computer-based format, except for the Drawing section in the B.Arch paper, which will be done offline.
Language of Examination: The exam will be available in English and Hindi for all center cities.
Duration of Examination: The total duration of the exam is 3 hours.
Number of Sections: Both B.Arch and B.Plan papers have three sections.
B.Arch:

B.Plan:

Type of Questions: In the B.Arch paper, the Mathematics section has multiple-choice questions and questions with numerical value answers. The Aptitude section has multiple-choice questions, and the Drawing section tests your drawing aptitude. In the B.Plan paper, the Mathematics and Aptitude sections have multiple-choice questions, while the Planning section also consists of multiple-choice questions.
Number of Questions: The B.Arch paper has a total of 82 questions, while the B.Plan paper has 105 questions.
Total Marks: The maximum mark for both papers is 400.
Marking Scheme: For multiple-choice questions, you will be awarded 4 marks for each correct answer, and there will be a negative marking of 1 mark for each incorrect answer. For questions with numerical value answers, the marking scheme remains the same. In the Drawing Test of the B.Arch paper, two questions will be evaluated out of 100 marks.

Are JEE Main previous year papers enough for preparation?
Previous year papers are essential but not sufficient on their own. Use them alongside NCERT for fundamentals, eSaral's chapter-wise practice problems for topic depth, and full mock tests for exam simulation. Previous year papers tell you what to expect — structured study builds the knowledge to answer it.
How many years of JEE Main previous year papers should I solve?
Solve at least the last 5 years — ideally 2020 to 2025 — across all shifts. NTA began major pattern changes from 2019 onward, so older papers have different structures and are less representative of what you will face. After completing 5 years, go back further for additional practice.
Should I solve JEE Main papers shift-wise or combined?
Solve them shift-wise, one complete paper at a time, in a timed 3-hour sitting. Each shift is a separate NTA paper with different questions. Mixing shifts defeats the purpose of timed practice. Analyse your performance after each paper before moving to the next one.
How is JEE Main different from JEE Advanced?
JEE Main is a computer-based test with MCQs and numerical questions, worth 300 marks across 3 subjects. JEE Advanced has two papers, including integer-type and matrix-match questions, and tests deeper problem-solving. JEE Advanced is significantly harder and is attempted only after qualifying for JEE Main.
Is there negative marking in JEE Main numerical questions?
No. Numerical value questions carry no negative marking. If you are unsure, attempt them — a wrong numerical answer costs you nothing. Only MCQ wrong answers attract a −1 deduction. Always attempt all 5 numerical questions per subject, even when uncertain.
How do I use JEE Main previous year papers effectively?
Solve each paper under strict timed conditions — 3 hours, no breaks, no looking up answers mid-paper. After the attempt, analyse every wrong answer and every skipped question. Identify which topic cost you the most marks. Revise that topic before attempting the next paper. This loop of test, analyse, and revise is what actually improves your score.
