How JEE Main and JEE Advanced are connected

JEE Main is the gateway: qualifying it is mandatory to sit for JEE Advanced. Only the top 2.5 lakh candidates from JEE Main (across all categories) can register for JEE Advanced. JEE Main scores are used for admission to NITs, IIITs and GFTIs, while JEE Advanced scores decide IIT admissions.

JEE Advanced 2027 date (expected): JEE Advanced 2027 is expected in May 2027, with registration expected to open in April 2027 after the JEE Main Session 2 result. The official dates will be announced by the organising IIT on jeeadv.ac.in.

For a deep dive into each exam, read our JEE Main guide and JEE Advanced guide.

What Is New in JEE Main 2027 Registration

This year’s form adds a few steps that candidates did not face before:

  1. Digital identity check. Before filling the form, you verify yourself through DigiLocker, MeriPehchaan or JanParichay. The portal pulls your name, date of birth and gender from that account, so make sure those details are correct in it.
  2. Live photo. You capture a photo on the spot with a webcam or phone, in addition to uploading a signature.
  3. APAAR ID is optional. The form asks whether you have one. If you don’t, choose “No”. You can still apply.
  4. Late window. There is now a short late-application window with a flat ₹500 on top of your category fee.

Fix errors during the correction window. Some fields, such as APAAR ID, were not editable in the previous cycle.

JEE Main 2027 Eligibility Criteria

You can apply for JEE Main 2027 if you passed Class 12 (or equivalent) in 2025 or 2026, or are appearing in 2027. There is no upper age limit. You get 3 consecutive years from your Class 12 passing year, with 2 sessions a year, so up to 6 attempts.

  • Subjects: Physics and Mathematics, plus Chemistry, Biology, Biotechnology or a technical vocational subject (at least 5 subjects in all).
  • Minimum marks to apply: none. The 75% rule (65% for SC/ST/PwD), or the top 20 percentile of your board, applies only for NIT, IIIT and GFTI admission through JoSAA.
  • Passed Class 12 in 2024 or earlier: not eligible for 2027.

  4. Capture your live photo and upload your signature and any certificates.
  5. Choose your paper(s) and pay the fee online (UPI, net banking, card).
  6. Submit the form, then download and save the confirmation page.

JEE Main Exam Pattern and Syllabus (Quick Overview)

The detailed syllabus will be confirmed with the official notification, but the exam pattern is expected to follow the established structure:

  • Duration: 3 hours
  • Total marks: 300
  • Subjects: Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics
  • Question types: Multiple-choice questions and numerical value-based questions

JEE Main Cutoff: Category-Wise (Indicative, Based on Previous Years)

JEE Main cutoff is the minimum percentile a candidate must achieve to qualify for JEE Advanced and to be considered for NIT, IIIT and GFTI admissions.

JEE Advanced cutoff is the minimum aggregate score required for IIT admission, set every year by the Joint Admission Board (JAB) and varying by category and programme.

Category

JEE Main cutoff (indicative)

JEE Advanced cutoff (indicative)

General (GEN)

~89–95 percentile

~35–40% aggregate

OBC-NCL

~74–80 percentile

~31–36%

SC

~54–60 percentile

~17–22%

ST

~44–50 percentile

~17–20%

PwD

~0.11 percentile

~17%

These figures are based on recent years. The 2027 cutoffs will be declared officially by NTA and JAB after the results. For college options, see our list of top NIT colleges.

JEE Main Admit Card 2027

NTA will publish exam city slips on 30 December 2026 and Session 1 admit cards on 13 January 2027 at jeemain.nta.nic.in. Download and print the admit card, and carry it with a valid government photo ID.

Do not forget: Carry both the admit card and a valid government-issued photo ID (Aadhaar, Passport, Voter ID or Driving Licence) to the exam hall. Candidates without both will not be allowed to enter. Download and check your admit card well before the exam date.

JEE Main 2027 Preparation Strategy

Phase-wise preparation plan for JEE 2027

Phase 1: Foundation (Class 11 or starting point)

If you are in Class 11 or just starting, build a strong base in all three subjects together.

  • Physics: Mechanics (NLM, Work-Energy, Rotational), Waves and Thermodynamics, which feed heavily into Class 12 and JEE Advanced.
  • Chemistry: Mole Concept, GOC (General Organic Chemistry), Chemical Bonding and the Periodic Table, which unlock all later chapters.
  • Mathematics: Quadratics, Trigonometry and basic Coordinate Geometry, the prerequisites for Class 12 Maths.
  • Study hours: Build up to 6–8 hours a day. Consistency beats intensity: 7 hours every day is better than 14 hours only on weekends.

Phase 2: Full syllabus completion (now to mid-December 2026)

Finish the remaining syllabus and test chapter by chapter. Phase 3: mid-December to the exam: full-length mocks twice a week plus error analysis.

Phase 3: JEE Main revision (December 2026 to January 2027)

This phase is intensive revision and mock testing. Take at least 2 full-length mocks a week. After each mock, analyse every error and tag its type (concept gap, calculation error, misread question, time pressure), then fix that specific gap. Solve the previous year JEE Main papers from 2019 to 2026 under timed conditions, because question templates repeat and are recognised only through timed practice.

Phase 4: JEE Advanced preparation (February–May 2027)

After Session 1, shift to JEE Advanced level:

Subject-wise strategy

  • Physics: Concept first, then numericals. Never solve a problem you do not understand conceptually; JEE Advanced Physics needs derivation-level understanding, not just formulas.
  • Chemistry: Practise Physical Chemistry calculations daily. Learn Organic Chemistry through mechanism and reaction logic, not memorisation. For Inorganic Chemistry, read NCERT thoroughly and use visual mnemonics for d-block and p-block.
  • Mathematics: Maths is a skill, so practise daily. Even 30 minutes of problem solving keeps you sharp.
