Question:

At a cricket test match $\frac{2}{7}$ of the spectators were in a covered place while 15000 were in open. Find the total number of spectators.

Solution:

Ratio of spectators in the open $=1-\frac{2}{7}$

$=\frac{5}{7}$

Total number of spectators in the open $=x$

Then, $\frac{5}{7} \times x=15000$

$\Rightarrow x=15000 \div \frac{5}{7}$

$=15000 \times \frac{7}{5}$

$=\frac{15000}{1} \times \frac{7}{5}$

$=\frac{15000 \times 7}{1 \times 5}$

$=\frac{10500}{5}$

$=21000$

Hence, the total number of spectators is 21,000
