Solution:
If $f(x)$ is a polynomial and $\alpha$ is any real number, then the real number obtained by replacing $x$ by $\alpha$ in $f(x)$, is called the value of $f(x)$ at $x=\alpha$ and is denoted by $f(\alpha)$
