Is It Worth Taking a Drop Year After Already Getting an IIT Rank?

From JEE Advanced Rank 2300 to 378: Arya’s Drop-Year Journey

Taking a drop after a poor result is one thing. Taking a drop after already securing around rank 2300 in JEE Advanced is a very different decision.

Most people around Arya told him to accept the IIT options available to him. Some suggested that moving from rank 2300 to a rank under 100 or 500 would not make a major difference.

But Arya had a clear goal. He wanted to study at the Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru, and he was willing to spend another year trying.

The drop year was not smooth. He felt isolated, watched his friends move to IITs, struggled during the first few months and slipped to around rank 7500 in his January JEE Main attempt.

Still, he continued.

He improved to approximately rank 1612 in the second JEE Main attempt and finally secured rank 378 in JEE Advanced, followed by admission to Mathematics and Computing at IISc.

What Should You Consider Before Taking a JEE Drop Year?

Arya does not describe himself as someone who had always been a top-ranked student.

Until around Class 10, he usually scored between 75% and 80%. His final Class 10 board result improved to approximately 92%.

In Class 11, he studied largely through self-study and performed well in the early stages of different Olympiads, especially the Mathematics Olympiad examinations. That gave him confidence that he would perform even better in Class 12.

Instead, Class 12 became a difficult year.

He says he was unable to clear the Olympiads he attempted, his JEE Main performance was disappointing, and he scored approximately 75.12% in his state board examination. He had hoped for a rank under 100 in JEE Advanced but received a rank of around 2300.

That result was good enough to give him college options, but not the outcome he had personally worked towards.

The Difficult First Months of the Drop Year

The first two or three months of Arya’s drop year were not productive.

His friends had left for different IITs. His old peer group was no longer around, and he felt that he had to manage much of the preparation by himself.

He remembers seeing friends enjoying college festivals and campus life while he was still sitting at home preparing for another attempt.

That created a strong feeling of being left behind.

The biggest challenge was not always the syllabus. It was the thought that he had given up a good rank, used another year and could still finish with a worse result.

That fear appeared to become real after his January JEE Main attempt. Despite scoring approximately 99.56 percentile, his rank was around 7500—lower than his previous JEE Advanced rank.

For a student who had taken a drop to improve significantly, this felt like moving backwards.

How the eSaral Test System Helped JEE Preparation

One of the strongest academic points Arya makes in the interview is about the level of eSaral’s mock tests.

He says that the actual JEE Advanced paper felt harder than some topic-based tests, but easier than the tougher full-level tests he had already attempted during preparation.

This meant that difficult questions in the final examination did not feel completely unfamiliar.

The eSaral team also explains that the mock papers were intentionally designed at a demanding level. Teachers discussed whether such difficult tests could temporarily demotivate students, but the aim was to prepare them for unexpected difficulty in the real examination.

Arya’s experience suggests that this tougher practice eventually helped him. When he faced the actual JEE Advanced paper, he had already experienced demanding tests under preparation conditions.

He scored 145 marks in Paper 1 and 96 in Paper 2. He felt the second paper could have gone better, but the combined performance was enough for rank 378. Watch the complete YouTube video where Arya talks about his journey from AIR 2300 to AIR 378 and the strategies that helped him improve.

Later, he confirmed that he and his father had spoken with the eSaral team after a mentor requested the discussion.
January setback and falling confidence Continued testing and preparation helped him recover after approximately rank 7500. What Advice Helps JEE Droppers Stay Consistent Through Setbacks?

Arya does not recommend taking a drop casually.

His advice is that students should take the decision only when they have strong belief in their goal and are mentally prepared for the year ahead.

He also highlights the importance of parent support. Read the JEE Dropper Year Rebuild Strategy. During a drop year, friends may move ahead, relatives may question the decision, and test results may temporarily fall. In those moments, family can become the most reliable support system.

His final advice is simple: keep working, protect yourself from unnecessary negativity, and maintain belief in the process.

Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers to common questions.

How did eSaral help Arya prepare for JEE Advanced?

Arya specifically mentions the difficulty of eSaral’s mock tests. He says the tougher tests prepared him so well that parts of the actual JEE Advanced examination felt easier in comparison.

Should every student take a drop after receiving a good JEE rank?

No. Arya says students should take a drop only when they are confident about their goal and mentally prepared for the pressure. His story is an individual experience, not a guarantee of similar results.

Can a JEE Main percentile stay high while the rank still drops?

Yes — a strong percentile can still translate to a weaker rank depending on that session's competition and normalization. eSaral's Marks vs Percentile guide helps students interpret this gap instead of assuming their preparation has failed.

Is it worth taking a JEE drop year after already securing a decent IIT rank?

It depends on how clear and personally important the goal is — a drop year should be a deliberate decision, not a reaction to outside opinions. eSaral's Dropper Course is built for students in exactly this situation, with structured rebuild plans rather than a repeat of the same preparation.

What helps JEE droppers stay consistent after a setback?

Continued structured testing, mentor check-ins, and limiting exposure to outside negativity or comparison all help droppers recover momentum. eSaral pairs droppers with mentors who track test performance and provide regular guidance through weak phases
