Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers to common questions.

What is Kinematics 2D in Class 11 Physics?

Kinematics 2D refers to the study of motion in two perpendicular dimensions (x and y axes) without considering the forces causing that motion. In the NCERT Class 11 syllabus, it appears as Chapter 4 — "Motion in a Plane" — and covers projectile motion, relative motion, uniform circular motion, and vector resolution of velocity and acceleration.

What are the most important formulas in 2D Kinematics for JEE?

The most tested formulas are: time of flight $T = \frac{2u\sin\theta}{g}$, maximum height $H = \frac{u^2\sin^2\theta}{2g}$, horizontal range $R = \frac{u^2\sin2\theta}{g}$, and equation of trajectory $y = x\tan\theta - \frac{gx^2}{2u^2\cos^2\theta}$. For JEE Main, relative motion formulas (river-boat problems) and circular motion acceleration $a_c = \frac{v^2}{r}$ are equally important.

How many questions come from Kinematics 2D in JEE Main?

Based on NTA's official JEE Main question papers from 2019 to 2024, Kinematics 2D typically contributes 1 to 3 questions per session. Projectile motion (both horizontal and oblique) is the most frequently tested case, appearing in nearly every session. Relative motion and uniform circular motion each appear roughly once per year on average.

Is Kinematics 2D important for NEET?

Yes. NEET consistently includes 1–2 questions from this chapter every year. Projectile motion and uniform circular motion are the highest-priority sub-topics for NEET. The questions tend to be more formula-application based and less derivation-heavy than JEE questions, so mastering the key formulas through a mind map is an efficient strategy.

What is the difference between horizontal and oblique projection in Kinematics 2D?

In horizontal projection, the initial velocity is entirely horizontal ($u_y = 0$), so the object is launched parallel to the ground — like a ball rolling off a table. In oblique projection, the initial velocity has both horizontal ($u\cos\theta$) and vertical ($u\sin\theta$) components — like a ball kicked at an angle. The formulas for time of flight, range, and maximum height differ between the two cases.
