Chapter 1: Understanding Social Science

The book opens with a basic concepts chapter that clears up exactly what Social Science is and how it can be defined. It introduces the four parts that make up Social Science — History, Geography, Civics and Economics — and explains how each of these is dealt with individually, as well as how they interconnect with society as a whole.

Geography Chapters: A More Comprehensive Approach

Geography gets two chapters in Part 1: Shaping of the Earth's Surface and Atmosphere and Climate.

Earlier Social Science books used to split this kind of content into separate parts. NCERT has instead built these chapters in a comprehensive way this time, bringing related content together rather than spreading it thin across multiple sections.

History Chapters: Early Humans to 1000 CE

History also gets two chapters. Early Humans and Beginning of Civilization covers the rise of different civilizations, including Harappa, Mohenjodaro, Egyptian, and Chinese civilizations. This is followed by State and Society up to 1000 CE, described as another important chapter within the History section of Part 1.

Political Science Chapters: Democracy, Elections, and the Emergency

Political Science contributes two chapters: Understanding Democracy and Elections.

The Understanding Democracy chapter goes into where democracy came from, how the roots of democracy were formed in India, what functions democracy performs, which countries are democratic versus non-democratic, and why democracy matters.

The Elections chapter builds on this by looking at how elections are actually conducted in India as a democratic country — including the First Past The Post (FPTP) system and Proportional Representation. A section on the Emergency period has also been added into this part of the book, bringing in content that was in the news recently.

Economics Chapters: New Topics Moved Down from Class 11

Economics is where the biggest structural change shows up. Two new chapters have been added: Building Blocks in Economics: The Problem of Choice and The Price Puzzle: What Drives the Market.

Content in these chapters — such as scarcity, opportunity cost, trade-offs, and the central problems of an economy — was previously taught only to students who picked Commerce in Class 11. That content has now, at least in part, been introduced directly at the Class 9 level. The Price Puzzle chapter brings in newer terms like demand, supply, and market equilibrium, which students will now be reading and understanding for the first time at this stage.

A Closer Look Inside Chapter 2: Shaping of the Earth's Surface

To show what the new book actually feels like to study from, it helps to walk through one chapter in detail — Chapter 2: Shaping of the Earth's Surface.

The chapter opens with five questions placed right at the start, framed so that a student should be able to answer all five once the chapter is finished. These include questions like: What shapes the Earth's surface? What is plate tectonic theory? How are landforms formed? How are landforms associated with disasters?

Alongside this, the chapter provides key term definitions on the side — including a clear definition of "landform" — and uses graphical representations that make the content easier to follow and more engaging to read.

💡 Note from the walkthrough: Diagrams covering the Asthenosphere, Outer Core, Inner Core, Mantle, and Lithosphere — content that used to appear only in Class 11 Physical Geography — now appear directly in this Class 9 chapter, along with diagrams on Plate Movement, which was previously Class 11-level content as well.

Compared to the older NCERT edition, the difficulty level of this chapter has clearly gone up. This is treated as a positive change: studying concepts in more depth at this stage builds a stronger foundation for later.

The chapter also includes:

  • A map exercise involving two tectonic plates, where students must write a description and fill out an accompanying table.
  • An "Explore" section asking students to examine how earthquakes and volcanoes are related to each other.
  • A map showing the global distribution of earthquakes and volcanoes.
  • Sample questions such as: "Relate various physiographic divisions you have studied in earlier grades with various endogenic forces," which introduces the terms endogenic forces and exogenic forces.

Overall, the questions in this chapter are described as more competency-based than before, reflecting the same increase in difficulty level seen across the rest of the book. For revision of the Class 8 concepts referenced as "earlier grades" in these questions, the NCERT Class 8 books are a useful place to look back at.
