Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers to common questions.

What is the difference between heat and temperature?

Temperature measures the average kinetic energy of molecules in a substance and determines the direction of heat flow. Heat is the total energy transferred between two bodies due to a temperature difference. Temperature is an intensive property; heat is an extensive one measured in Joules.

How many questions come from Thermal Properties of Matter in JEE Main?

JEE Main typically asks 1–2 questions from this chapter each year. Based on previous years' papers (2015–2024), calorimetry numericals and Newton's Law of Cooling are the most frequently tested areas. The chapter contributes 4–8 marks across Physics in a standard JEE Main paper.

What topics are covered in Thermal Properties of Matter Class 11?

The chapter covers temperature scales, thermal equilibrium, the Zeroth Law, thermal expansion (linear, area, volumetric), anomalous expansion of water, specific heat capacity, molar heat capacity, calorimetry, latent heat, and the three modes of heat transfer — conduction, convection, and radiation including Stefan's Law and Newton's Law of Cooling.

Is Newton's Law of Cooling important for JEE Main?

Yes. Newton's Law of Cooling (dT/dt = −k(T − T₀)) is directly tested in JEE Main through numerical problems involving cooling time, temperature at a specific time, or identifying the cooling constant. It is valid only when the temperature difference between the body and surroundings is small (less than ~30 K for practical purposes).

What is the relation between α, β, and γ in thermal expansion?

For isotropic solids, the coefficient of area expansion (β) equals twice the coefficient of linear expansion (α), and the coefficient of volume expansion (γ) equals three times α. So: β = 2α and γ = 3α. These relations hold for small temperature changes and uniform, isotropic materials.

What is anomalous expansion of water and why is it important?

Water contracts (instead of expanding) when heated from 0°C to 4°C, reaching maximum density at 4°C. Above 4°C, it expands normally. This anomalous behaviour allows aquatic life to survive winter — the denser water at 4°C sinks, keeping the lake bottom unfrozen. It is a standard NEET and CBSE board question.
