Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers to common questions.

How do you find the nth term of a GP?

The nth term of a Geometric Progression is Tₙ = arⁿ⁻¹, where a is the first term and r is the common ratio. First identify r by dividing any term by its preceding term (r = T₂/T₁). Then substitute n into the formula. Always verify that the ratio is constant before classifying the sequence as a GP.

What are the most important formulas in Sequence and Series for JEE Main?

The highest-priority formulas are: (1) Tₙ and Sₙ of AP, (2) Tₙ and Sₙ of GP including infinite GP, (3) AM ≥ GM ≥ HM and GM² = AM × HM, and (4) Σn, Σn², Σn³. These appear in roughly 70–80% of Sequence and Series questions in past JEE Main papers, according to NTA's released question data.

What is the difference between a sequence and a series?

A sequence is an ordered list of numbers following a rule — for example, 2, 4, 6, 8. A series is the sum of those terms — 2 + 4 + 6 + 8 = 20. Every series comes from a sequence, but they are not the same object. For exam purposes, series problems ask you to find Sₙ, while sequence problems ask for Tₙ.

How do you insert n arithmetic means between two numbers?

To insert n arithmetic means between a and b, the common difference is d = (b − a) / (n + 1). The n means are then a+d, a+2d, …, a+nd. For example, to insert 3 AMs between 2 and 10: d = (10−2)/4 = 2, so the means are 4, 6, 8. This technique is a standard Class 11 board and JEE question type

What is the sum of an infinite GP and when can it be used?

The sum of an infinite GP is S∞ = a / (1 − r), where a is the first term and r is the common ratio. This formula is valid only when |r| < 1 (the series converges). If |r| ≥ 1, the series diverges and no finite sum exists. This condition is frequently tested in JEE through trick questions where r appears small but isn't.

How many questions come from Sequence and Series in JEE Main?

JEE Main typically contains 1 to 2 questions from Sequence and Series per session, based on NTA's official question papers from 2019–2024. Each question carries 4 marks. Given the chapter's moderate difficulty and well-defined formula set, it offers one of the best marks-per-hour returns in the Mathematics paper.

Is Harmonic Progression directly asked in JEE?

HP is rarely asked in isolation, but it appears regularly in combined AM–GM–HM problems and in questions about inserting harmonic means between two numbers. The most tested result is GM² = AM × HM. Converting any HP problem to AP by taking reciprocals is the standard and safest approach for JEE.
