Why is the rate of breathing in aquatic

Question:

Why is the rate of breathing in aquatic organisms much faster than in terrestrial organisms ? (CCE 2011, 2012)

Solution:

Most of the aquatic organisms obtain oxygen from water. The amount of dissolved oxygen is quite small as compared to the amount of oxygen in air.

Therefore, in order to obtain required oxygen from water, the aquatic animals like fishes have to breathe much faster as compared to the terrestrial
