Important Topics covered in Chapter 10 - Exponents and Powers

NCERT solutions for class 8 maths chapter 10 Exponents and Powers covers important topics mentioned below.

10.1 Introduction

10.2 Powers with Negative Exponents

10.3 Laws of Exponents

10.4 Use of Exponents to Express Small Numbers in Standard form

10.4.1 Comparing very large and very small numbers

10.1 Introduction - In this chapter, we will explore the concept of exponent. Exponents are used to reduce larger quantities to smaller values. A larger number can be reduced to a smaller number by this method.

For example, let's say we have a big number like 1200000000000000. We can write that as 12x10^15 and we can also write that as Exponents.

10.2  Powers with Negative Exponents - Class 8 Power and exponents is a relatively simple chapter that requires very little practice. If you have a good grasp of the topics, you will be able to solve questions easily. The other part of the chapter deals with defining powers that make up negative exponents. Throughout this chapter, you’ll be presented with a number of examples and questions to help you better understand the concept. This part of the chapter feels a little bit easier than the other topics. It only deals with the finding of the value of some numbers with negative power. You should solve a large number of questions to get a better understanding of powers with negative power.

10.3  Laws of Exponents - In the previous section, we talked about positive exponents. Now, in this section, we are going to talk about the procedure and the law that applies to the positive and the negative exponents of non-zero integers.

Questions based on these laws are also included in this section. Make sure you read through these questions thoroughly to make sure you understand exponents’ laws. eSaral’s solutions will provide you with a wide range of questions that can enhance your understanding and help you remember the concepts better.

10.4 Use of Exponents to Express Small Numbers in Standard form - In this section, you will learn how to use exponents to express small numbers in standard form. There are a lot of facts that you need to go through to understand this topic. Some of the facts mentioned in this section are: Size of a plant cell: 0.00001275m, Speed of light: 300,000,000m/sec, Average radius of the sun: 695000 km etc.

You are asked to see how a couple of numbers are smaller than others. This information helps students understand how to convert small numbers in the standard format.

10.4.1 Comparing very large and very small numbers - In this section, we can measure the distance from Earth to the Sun and from Earth to the Moon.
