Chapter 1:  Some Basic Concepts of Chemistry

This chapter explains to you the importance of chemistry, molecular mass, and atomic mass. Different fundamental theories and laws, such as Avogadro's Law, Dalton's Atomic Theory, and the Law of Conservation of Mass, all of the topics are  briefly explained in this chapter. You can also get some problems based on determining the molecular weight of compounds, mass percent, and concentration. In this chapter, you will clearly understand empirical and molecular formulas, molarity, molality, and the molar concept. Topics discussed in this chapter are: General Introduction: Importance and scope of chemistry.

Historical approach to particulate nature of matter, Dalton's atomic theory: the concept of atoms, elements, and molecules.Laws of chemical combination. Molecular and atomic masses. Molar mass and mole concept; percentage composition and empirical and molecular formula; chemical reactions, stoichiometry, and calculations based on stoichiometry all these are explained in this chapter 1.

Chapter- 2 Structure of Atom

In chapter 2, you will be introduced to Thomson's atomic model, subatomic particles, Bohr's model, Rutherford's atomic model, and the quantum mechanical model of the atom. This chapter consists of problems related to the relationship between frequency and wavelength, the energy associated with electromagnetic radiation, and subatomic particles. You will get to know how to write electron configurations and transition in different shells, which is very important for the exam.

Chapter- 3 Classification of Elements and Periodicity in Properties

So learning all the concepts from this chapter is very important for examination.You will also learn about s-block, p-block, d-block, and f-block elements from the periodic table, physical and chemical properties, and chemical reactivity trends from this chapter. Chapter 4: Chemical Bonding and Molecular Structure

Chemistry is based on our surroundings and is called the central science. The topics discussed in chapter 4 are – VSEPR Theory, Lewis structures, Valence Bond Theory, polar character of covalent bonds and hydrogen bonding. You will learn how to draw Lewis dot symbols for molecules, atoms and polyatomic ions. Chapter 5: States of Matter

In chapter 2 you will get to know about the intermolecular forces and how they affect the physical state of a substance. It deals with other concepts related with gaseous and liquid states of matter. You will be able to understand Boyle's Law, Charle’s Law, Gay Lussac’s Law and Avogadro Law which has more marks as per the exam pattern. Problems on finding partial, critical temperature and pressure, Van der Waals force and other intermolecular forces are present in this chapter.

Topics covered in this chapter are -Three states of matter, intermolecular interactions, type of bonding, melting and boiling points, role of gas laws in elucidating the concept of the molecule, Boyle’s law, Gay Lussac’s law, Charles’ law, Avogadro’s law, ideal behaviour, empirical derivation of gas equations, Avogadro’s number, ideal gas equation, deviation from ideal behaviour, liquefaction of gases, critical temperature.
Liquid State – Vapour pressure, surface tension (qualitative idea only, no mathematical derivations) and viscosity.

Chapter 6: Thermodynamics

Thermodynamics is a branch of science which explains the relation between heat and the other energy forms. On the basis of exchange of matter and energy, thermodynamic systems are divided into three types – open, closed and isolated systems. You will learn more about the concepts like terms in thermodynamics, applications, calorimetry, enthalpies, spontaneity and Gibbs energy change and equilibrium. The problems in the NCERT Solutions are answered in a proper manner completely based on the update syllabus of the CBSE board.

Topics covered in this chapter are - Concepts of system, types of systems, surroundings, heat, work, energy, extensive and intensive properties, state functions.

In this chapter, you will learn  about buffer solutions, equilibrium constant and the common ion effect. Chapter 8: Redox Reactions

You will get questions based on the classical idea of redox reaction, redox reactions in terms of electron transfer reactions, oxidation number and electrode processes. Students are suggested to first complete the entire chapter using the NCERT textbook prescribed by the CBSE board.

Chapter 9: Organic Chemistry – Some Basic Principles and Techniques

Chapter 13: Hydrocarbons

The  study of properties, structure, reactions, composition and synthesis of organic compounds is called organic chemistry. It teaches you about concepts like alkanes and its preparation from alkyl halides, unsaturated hydrocarbons and carboxylic acids. You will also learn about the physical and chemical properties of alkanes as per the CBSE syllabus. Alkynes: IUPAC nomenclature, structure of triple bond (ethyne), physical properties, methods of preparation, chemical reactions: acidic character of alkynes, addition reaction of – hydrogen, hydrogen halides, halogens  and water.

Aromatic hydrocarbons: Introduction, IUPAC nomenclature; Benzene: resonance, aromaticity; chemical properties: mechanism of electrophilic substitution – halogenation, nitration sulphonation, Friedel Craft’s alkylation and acylation; directive influence of functional group in mono-substituted benzene; carcinogenicity and toxicity.
