Accumulation of Variation During Reproduction

8.2

Heredity

8.1 Accumulation of Variation During Reproduction: The accumulation of genetic variation during reproduction is the process whereby genetic diversity within a population increases over time as a result of sexual reproduction and mutation.

8.2 Heredity: Heredity is the transfer of genetic traits, characteristics and information from parent to child through the transfer of genes. A gene is a segment of DNA that contains instructions for constructing and maintaining the structure and function of an organism. Inheritance is the transfer of traits and characteristics from parent to child over generations.

Subtopics covered in the section 8.2 Heredity:

8.2.1 Inherited Traits

8.2.2 Rules for the Inheritance of Traits - Mendel’s Contributions

8.2.3 How do these Traits get Expressed?

8.2.4 Sex Determination

Key Points of Class 10 Science Chapter 8

  • Heredity refers to the transfer of genetic traits and information from one parent to another through the transfer of genes.

  • Alleles are the segments of the DNA that carry the instructions for a trait. Dominant and recessive traits are characterized by dominant alleles and recessive traits, respectively.

  • A recessive trait is a condition in which a heterozygous individual carries a recessive allele.

  • Genotype and phenotype refer to an individual’s genetic makeup.

  • Mendelian genetics describes how alleles are separated during the gamete formation process and how various genes assimilate independently. Punnett squares are a tool used to predict the genetic outcome of cross-breeding between individuals with a known genotype.

  • Polygenic inheritance refers to the fact that many traits are influenced by several genes, resulting in a variety of phenotypes as well as continuous variation.

  • Environmental influence refers to the influence of genes on phenotypes.

  • Heredity and Evolution refers to the contribution of genetic variation to the formation of a population through natural selection, with beneficial traits increasing in frequency over generations.

  • Inherited genetic mutations can lead to genetic disorders that can affect an individual’s health and wellbeing. Inheritance of sex-linked traits refers to certain traits that are linked to sex chromosomes and follow certain patterns of inheritance. Chromosomes and genes are found on chromosomes. In humans, there are 23 pairs of chromosomes and one pair determines sex. Sexual reproduction, including gamete fusion and fertilization, introduces genetic diversity.

  • Variation and adaptation: genetic variation allows populations to adjust to changing environments and increase their survival chances.

  • Selective breeding: Humans use selective breeding to emphasize certain traits in plants or animals for agricultural or domestic purposes.

  • DNA is the genetic material that carries genetic information and is the foundation of heredity.
