Introduction

In this topic we will learn about the oscillatory motion and the description of a periodic motion, in general, and oscillatory motion, in particular, requires some fundamental concepts, like period, frequency, displacement, amplitude and phase which is explained in the next topic.

Periodic And Oscillatory Motions

In this topic we will get to know more about oscillatory motion with help of examples and with diagrams.

The object undergoing periodic motion has an equilibrium position somewhere inside its path, when the body is at this position no net external force acts on it. Therefore, if it is left there at rest, it remains at rest forever. If the object or a body is given a small displacement from the position, a force comes into play which tries to bring the body back to the equilibrium point, giving rise to oscillations or vibrations. For instance, a ball placed in a bowl will be in equilibrium at the bottom place. If displaced a little from its point, it will perform oscillations in the bowl. Every oscillatory motion is periodic, but not every periodic motion is oscillatory. Circular motion is periodic, but it is not oscillatory motion.

Simple Harmonic Motion

In this topic we will discuss SHM simple harmonic motion with various examples and with diagrams. A Simple Harmonic Motion, or SHM, is known as a motion in which the restoring force is directly proportional to the displacement of the body from its mean position. The direction of this restoring force is always towards the mean position.

Simple Harmonic Motion And Uniform Circular Motion

In this section, we will learn that the projection of uniform circular motion on a diameter of the circle follows simple harmonic motion. There is a simple experiment that helps us visualise this connection. First tie a ball to the end of a string and make it move in a horizontal plane about a fixed point with a constant angular speed. The ball will then perform a uniform circular motion in the horizontal plane.

Velocity And Acceleration In Simple Harmonic Motion

In this section of chapter 13 class 11 we will get to know about velocity and acceleration in SHM with examples and there is one derivation for this. Along with this there are different type of numerical problems.

Energy In Simple Harmonic Motion

A body exhibiting simple harmonic motion or SHM has potential energy by virtue of its displacement from the mean position. By virtue of SHM velocity, it also possesses kinetic energy. During the oscillatory motion, these energies may vary, but their sum remains constant, provided no dissipative forces are present.

The Simple Pendulum

The simple pendulum contains a small bob of mass 'm' suspended by a thin string secured to a platform at its upper end of length ‘L’. The simple pendulum is a mechanical system that moves or sways in an oscillatory motion. This motion occurs in a vertical plane and is generally driven by gravitational force.

Key Points of NCERT Solutions for Class 11 Physics Chapter 14

In our day to day life, we encounter various kinds of motions. The study of oscillatory motion is basic to Physics. Oscillations and Resonance is one of the most interesting chapters in class 11th. One will get to know about periodic motion, simple harmonic motion, and other related concepts from this chapter. Following are some important concepts and key points of Oscillations and Resonance are given below.

  • The period ‘T’ is the least time after which motion repeats itself. Thus, motion repeats itself after nT where n is an integer number.

  • Every periodic motion is not SHM. Only that periodic motion governed by the force law F = – k x is called simple harmonic.

  • The motion of a simple pendulum is called a simple harmonic for small angular displacement.
