Topics Covered in Exercise 1.1 Class 8 Mathematics Questions

NCERT solutions for class 8 maths chapter 1 ex 1.1 focuses primarily on the basic explanation of properties of rational numbers. The following topics are discussed in the exercise 1.1.

1.

Properties of Rational Numbers

  • Closure

  • Commutativity

  • Associativity

  • The role of Zero (0)

  • The Role of 1

  • Distributivity of Multiplication over Addition for Rational Numbers

Rational Numbers - Rational numbers are classified as such if they can be expressed as p/q, with p and q being integers (q > 0). These numbers include all natural numbers, whole numbers, and integers. Ex. 1/2, 4/3

  1. Properties of Rational Numbers

  • Closure - In the case of two rational numbers, x and y, the result of adding, subtracting and multiplying operations results in a rational number. We can also see that a rational number is closed under addition, subtraction and multiplication.

            Examples: (7/6)+(2/5) = 47/30

                             (5/6) – (1/3) = 1/2

                             (2/5). (3/7) = 6/3

  • Commutativity - Addition and multiplication is commutative for rational numbers.

                           Commutative law of addition: a+b = b+a

                           Commutative law of multiplication: a×b = b×a

  •  Associativity - Rational numbers have an associative property for addition and multiplication.

Suppose that x, y and z are rational. Then for addition: x+(y+z)=(x+y)+z

For multiplication: x(yz)=(xy)z.

  • The role of Zero (0) - Zero is called the identity for the addition of rational numbers. It is the additive identity for integers and whole numbers as well.

  • The Role of 1 -  1 is the multiplicative identity for rational numbers.

  • Distributivity of Multiplication over Addition for Rational Numbers - This proves that for all integers, p, q, and r

 p(q + r) = pq + pr

 p(q – r) = pq – pr
