  1. Some Special Parallelogram

  • Rhombus - A quadrilateral having all four sides of equal length is called a rhombus.

              Properties of Rhombus:

    (I) The opposite sides are parallel and equal in a rhombus. Hence, it is a parallelogram.

(II) All the 4 sides are equal in a rhombus.

(III) Opposite angles are equal in rhombus.

(IV) Diagonals of a rhombus intersect each other at right angles.

  (V)  Diagonals bisect each other.

(VI) The diagonals of a rhombus are perpendicular bisectors of one another.

(VII) Each of the diagonals divides the rhombus into two equal triangles.

  •  A rectangle - A parallelogram that has the equal opposite sides and the equal angles is called a Rectangle.

            Properties of Rectangle:

   (I) Opposite sides are parallel and equal.

   (II) Opposite angles are equal.

(III) Adjacent angles make a pair of supplementary angles.

(IV) Diagonals are of equal length.

   (V) Diagonals bisect each other.

(VI) All the four angles are 90°

(VII) Each of the diagonal bisects the rectangle into 2 congruent triangles.

(VIII) It has 2 lines of symmetry – a horizontal and a vertical.

(IX)The mid-points of the 4 sides of a rectangle, when joined in order, form a rhombus.

  • A square - A Square is a rectangle that has all four sides equal.

                      Properties of Square:

      (I) All four sides are equal.

      (II) Opposite sides are parallel.

(III) Diagonals are of equal length.

(IV) Diagonals are perpendicular bisecte to each other.

      (V) All the four angles are 90°.

(VI) It is a highly symmetric figure with 4 lines of symmetry – a horizontal, a vertical and the 2 diagonals.

(VII) Each of the diagonal bisects the square into 2 congruent triangles. In fact, both the pairs of congruent triangles are also congruent to one another.
