Different notions of development - Development Class 10 notes

People hold different notions of development because their life situations vary, and as a result, their aspirations, desires, and goals differ.

Importance of averages

As countries possess different populations, comparing total income alone does not provide information about the expected earnings of an average person. Therefore, we calculate the average income, which is the total income of a country divided by its total population. This is also referred to as per capita income.

According to the World Development Report 2006, the World Bank uses a criterion to classify countries. Countries with a per capita income of Rs 4,53,000 or more in 2004 are classified as rich countries, while those with a per capita income of Rs 37,000 or less are considered low-income countries. India falls under the category of low-income countries as its per capita income in 2004 was only Rs 28000 per annum. Developed countries, excluding Middle Eastern countries and some small nations, are typically referred to as rich countries

Key terms - Development Class 10 notes

  • Development. Growth of economy along with the improvement in the quality of life of the people like health, education etc.
  • Per capita income. Is the average income obtained as the ratio between National Income and Population of a country.
  • National income. Is the money value of final goods and services produced by a country during an accounting year.

Human development Index - Development Class 10 notes

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) prepares a composite index each year through its Annual Human Development Report to measure the development of countries. The index uses major parameters such as longevity of life, levels of literacy, and per capita income to rank world countries into four categories: Very High Developed countries, High Developed countries, Medium Developed countries, and Low Developed countries.

The Infant Mortality Rate is defined as the number of children who die before the age of one year as a proportion of 1,000 live births in a given year. The Literacy Rate measures the proportion of literate population in the 7 years and above age group. The Net Attendance Ratio is the total number of children aged between 6-10 years attending school as a percentage of the total number of children in the same age group. The Body Mass Index (BMI) is used to determine if adults are undernourished. It is calculated by dividing the weight of a person (in kg) by the square of their height (in meters). If the resulting figure is less than 18.5, the person is considered undernourished. If the BMI is more than 25, the person is overweight.

Sustainable Development

Development without harming the environment is known as sustainable development. It refers to a development process that meets the current needs without compromising the needs of future generations.
