Why NEET Previous Year Question Papers Are Non-Negotiable

Every NEET topper — without exception — credits NEET previous year question papers as the foundation of their preparation. This is not a coincidence. NTA repeats concept patterns, and understanding those patterns is the difference between guessing and knowing.

Solving NEET previous year papers gives you three advantages no textbook can: you see exactly how NTA frames questions, you train your brain to answer under the 3-hour time constraint, and you identify your weak chapters before the real exam — not during it.

💡 Expert Tip by Saransh Gupta, IIT Bombay AIR-41: "I always tell students — the NEET paper is not testing your memory. It is testing your ability to apply concepts under pressure. The only way to build that skill is to simulate real exam conditions using previous year papers, at least three times a week in the final two months."

Students who practice with NEET PYQs (previous year questions) under timed conditions report a measurable improvement. In eSaral's 2025 NEET batch, students who solved a minimum of 5 years of papers improved their final scores by an average of 62 marks compared to their first mock test.

💡 Expert Tip by the eSaral Academic Team: "Do not solve papers in order from oldest to newest. Start with NEET 2022 and NEET 2023 — these papers best reflect the current NTA pattern, including statement-based and assertion-reason style questions that have become standard in recent years."

How Many Questions Come in a NEET Question Paper?

The NEET question paper contains 180 questions worth 720 marks, divided equally across three subjects.

Here is the exact structure as per the official NTA NEET exam pattern:

Subject Section A Section B Total Questions Total Marks
Physics 35 Qs 15 Qs (attempt any 10) 45 180
Chemistry 35 Qs 15 Qs (attempt any 10) 45 180
Botany 35 Qs 15 Qs (attempt any 10) 45 180
Zoology 35 Qs 15 Qs (attempt any 10) 45 180
Total 140 Qs 60 Qs (attempt 40) 180 720

Marking scheme: +4 for every correct answer, –1 for every wrong answer, 0 for unattempted. Understanding this structure is critical before solving any NEET previous year paper. Refer to the complete NEET exam pattern for section-by-section rules.

Subject-Wise Weightage: What Topics Appear Most in NEET Papers?

Knowing NEET question paper weightage by chapter is the fastest way to prioritise your revision. The data below is compiled from NEET 2019 to NEET 2024 official papers.

NEET Physics Weightage (Top Chapters)

Chapter Average Questions (2019–2024) Weightage
Mechanics (Laws of Motion, Work-Energy) 8–10 18–22%
Electrostatics & Current Electricity 6–8 13–18%
Modern Physics 4–5 9–11%
Optics 3–4 7–9%
Thermodynamics 3–4 7–9%

Full chapter-wise breakdown is available on the NEET Physics weightage page.

NEET Chemistry Weightage (Top Chapters)

Chapter Average Questions (2019–2024) Weightage
Organic Chemistry (overall) 14–17 31–38%
Physical Chemistry 10–12 22–27%
Inorganic Chemistry 8–10 18–22%
Coordination Compounds 3–4 7–9%
Chemical Bonding 3–4 7–9%

Visit the NEET Chemistry weightage page for a full topic-by-topic breakdown with year-wise trends.

NEET Biology Weightage (Top Chapters)

Biology makes up 50% of the NEET question paper (360 marks). Within Biology, these chapters dominate:

  • Genetics and Evolution: 14–18 questions across Botany and Zoology
  • Plant and Animal Physiology: 12–15 questions
  • Cell Biology and Biomolecules: 10–13 questions
  • Human Reproduction and Reproductive Health: 8–10 questions
  • Ecology and Environment: 7–9 questions

All topics are covered in the complete NEET syllabus, which is your single reference for what is in scope.

How to Use NEET Previous Year Papers Effectively

Most students download NEET question paper PDFs and then make the same critical error: they solve them casually, without a timer, and check answers immediately. That approach builds zero exam readiness. Here is the correct method.

Step 1: Simulate Real Exam Conditions

Set a 200-minute timer. Sit at a desk with no phone nearby. Attempt the full 180-question paper in one sitting, just as you would in the actual exam hall. This is non-negotiable.

Step 2: Score and Categorise Every Question

After submitting, go through each question and place it in one of four buckets:

  1. Got it right, confident — no further action needed
  2. Got it right, guessed — revisit the concept
  3. Got it wrong, knew the concept — careless error, mark for review
  4. Got it wrong, didn't know — concept gap, study the chapter

Step 3: Analyse Before Revising

Spend 30–40 minutes on paper analysis before you open any textbook. Note which chapters caused the most wrong answers. This gives you a prioritised revision list that no generic study plan can match.

Step 4: Targeted Revision

Revise only the chapters identified in Step 3. Do not re-study chapters where you scored perfectly. This focused revision is how students gain 30–50 marks in the final 30 days.

Step 5: Reattempt Weak Questions After 48 Hours

Come back to every question from buckets 2, 3, and 4 after two days. If you still cannot solve them unaided, flag the concept for one final revision before the exam.

Common Mistakes Students Make While Solving NEET Papers

Understanding what not to do is as important as knowing the right strategy.

Mistake 1 — Solving without a timer: NEET is a time-pressure exam. Solving casually at home and then struggling with time in the real paper is one of the top reasons for lower-than-expected scores.

Mistake 2 — Starting with NEET 2016 or 2017 papers: Papers from before 2019 followed a different pattern and did not include the two-section structure. Solving them gives a misleading picture of the current exam.

Mistake 3 — Skipping Biology PYQs: Many Physics and Chemistry aspirants skip Biology previous year questions thinking they are straightforward. In reality, NEET Biology features subtle, NCERT-language-based questions that require deliberate practice.

Mistake 4 — Not reviewing wrong answers: Marking wrong answers and moving on without understanding why is the single biggest waste of a student's preparation time.

Mistake 5 — Solving too many papers too fast: Quality beats quantity. One thoroughly analysed paper is worth five casually solved papers.

Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers to common questions.

How many questions are in the NEET question paper?

The NEET question paper has 180 questions for 720 marks. Physics, Chemistry, Botany, and Zoology each have 45 questions (35 in Section A + 15 in Section B, of which 10 must be attempted). Each correct answer gives +4 marks and each wrong answer deducts 1 mark.

Which year's NEET question paper is most important for 2026 preparation?

NEET 2022, 2023, and 2024 papers are the most important for NEET 2026 preparation because they reflect the current NTA pattern, including two-section structure, statement-based questions, and updated Biology question styles. Solve these three first, then extend to 2019–2021 papers for broader concept coverage.

Where can I download NEET previous year question papers for free?

NEET previous year question papers from 2019 to 2024 are available for free on eSaral's NEET question paper page, with official answer keys and detailed solutions. No login is required to download them.

How many years of NEET question papers should I solve?

Solve a minimum of 5 years of NEET question papers (2020–2024) under timed, exam-like conditions. If time permits, extend to 2019. Each paper takes approximately 200 minutes to solve and 40 minutes to analyse — plan accordingly in your study schedule.

Is NEET 2026 question paper expected to be tougher than 2025?

Based on historical trends observed by NTA, NEET papers tend to maintain a consistent difficulty level with slight variations year to year. However, the Biology section has seen increasingly NCERT-specific language-based questions since 2022. Students should prepare for a paper where reading comprehension of NCERT text is as important as concept recall.
