What are NEET Marks Vs Rank, and Why Does it Matter?

In 2023, a score of 580 put you somewhere around rank 30,000. In 2025, the same 580 placed you inside the top 5,000. Two years, two completely different realities — same marks, wildly different outcomes. This is the single most important thing to understand about the NEET marks-rank relationship before you start using any data table to predict your future.

NEET does not have a fixed conversion formula. No calculator takes your marks and spits out your exact rank every year. What you get instead is a snapshot — an official picture NTA releases after each exam showing where candidates actually landed based on that specific year's performance. Every year, that picture looks different.

This page gives you the official NTA data for 2023, 2024, and 2025 — three real snapshots — so you can see the trend yourself, not just memorise numbers from one year and assume they will hold forever.

How to calculate your expected NEET Rank?

NEET  is a valuable tool to predict the rank and estimate their potential rank in the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test. This prediction is based on various factors such as exam difficulty, raw marks, and historical data on rank distribution. The rank predictor helps students in evaluating their preparation level and setting achievable goals for securing admissions to medical colleges. These tools will analyse the difficulty level of the exam, individual performance, and historical data to provide an estimated rank range.

NEET 2025 Marks vs Rank — Official NTA Data

NEET 2025 was held on May 4, 2025. NTA declared results on June 14, 2025. This was a genuinely hard paper — Physics in particular was heavily numerical, and Biology passages were lengthy. The result: the highest score across 22.09 lakh candidates was 686 out of 720, achieved by Mahesh Kumar of Rajasthan, who studied entirely in Hindi medium.

  • 22,76,609 candidates registered.
  • 22,09,318 appeared.
  • 12,36,531 qualified.
  • The topper's percentile was 99.9999547.

What stands out immediately in this data

The top 100 ranks are compressed between 650 and 686 — a window of just 36 marks. Once you cross 600 in 2025, you are already inside the top 1,302. That tells you how hard the paper really was and how much it reshuffled the competitive landscape.

NEET 2025 Qualifying Cutoff — Category-wise (Official)

The qualifying cutoff is the floor — cross it, and you are in the merit list. But crossing the floor does not get you a government MBBS seat.

Category Qualifying Marks Range
General / EWS 144 – 686
OBC 113 – 143
SC 113 – 143
ST 113 – 143
General – PwD 129 – 143
OBC / SC / ST – PwD 113 – 128

The General category cutoff came down from 162 in 2024 to 144 in 2025 — a drop of 18 marks — purely because the paper was harder.

NEET 2024 Marks vs Rank — Official Data

NEET 2024 deserves its own explanation before you look at the numbers, because it was not a normal year.

The exam was held on May 5, 2024. Results came out on June 4, 2024. Initially, 67 candidates appeared to have scored 720. This triggered a nationwide controversy and Supreme Court proceedings. An expert panel from IIT Delhi reviewed the Physics section and found that a question with two possible correct answers had been awarded marks to some candidates but not others. After revision, the final corrected result was declared on July 26, 2024. Only 17 candidates retained perfect 720 scores and shared AIR 1.

Reading These Three Years Side by Side

NEET Score Rank in 2023 Rank in 2024 Rank in 2025
650+ ~4,000 – 5,000 ~29,000 ~77
620 ~16,000 – 20,000 ~65,000 ~1,500 – 3,000
600 ~21,000 ~76,000 ~1,302
580 ~30,000 ~91,000 ~4,000
550 ~49,000 ~1,44,000 ~12,000 – 17,000
500 ~1,25,000 ~2,09,000 ~76,000 – 85,000

The 2024 numbers look significantly worse for any given score. That is because the 2024 paper was relatively easier, overall scores were higher, and more candidates landed in the upper ranges. The 2025 paper brought scores down sharply, which is why the same marks give better ranks

The Tie-Breaking Order NTA Uses When Scores Are Equal

When multiple candidates score identical marks, NTA resolves the tie in this exact sequence:

  1. Biology marks are checked first.
  2. If still equal, Chemistry marks are compared.
  3. If the tie persists, the candidate with fewer total incorrect answers is ranked higher.
  4. If everything is still equal, the older candidate receives the higher rank.

The Gap Between Qualifying and Getting a Government Seat

In 2025, the General category qualifying cutoff was 144 marks. That means scoring 144 makes you a qualified NEET candidate. But a government MBBS seat under the All India Quota in 2025 closed at around 580 marks and above for most colleges — and well above 650 for AIIMS and JIPMER.

The gap is more than 400 marks. Qualifying for NEET at the minimum threshold gives you eligibility to participate in counselling. It does not give you a seat.

Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers to common questions.

Is the NEET qualifying cutoff the same as the seat cutoff?

No — they are completely different thresholds. The qualifying cutoff (144 for General in 2025) makes you eligible for counselling. The seat cutoff is the actual score at which the last seat in a given college was allotted during counselling — this is typically 380–580 marks above the qualifying cutoff for government seats. Qualifying for NEET only earns you the right to participate in the process.

How does NTA break a tie when two candidates score the same in NEET?

NTA first compares Biology marks, then Chemistry marks, then total incorrect answers (fewer is better), and finally age (older candidate ranks higher). This four-step sequence is applied in order; the process stops as soon as one step produces a difference between the tied candidates.

What was the NEET 2025 topper score and rank?

Mahesh Kumar from Rajasthan scored 686 out of 720 and held AIR 1 in NEET 2025. He studied entirely in Hindi medium. His percentile was 99.9999547. The maximum possible score is 720, but no candidate achieved a perfect score in 2025 — making 686 the effective ceiling for that year.

What is the NEET percentile and how is it different from rank?

Percentile shows the percentage of candidates you scored higher than. For example, a percentile of 98.8 means you outscored 98.8% of all test-takers. Rank is your absolute position — rank 21,000 means 20,999 candidates scored more than you. Both numbers come from the same result data but serve different purposes: percentile is useful for comparing across years; rank is what counselling uses directly.

Why does the same NEET marks give a different rank every year?

Rank depends on the relative performance of all 22+ lakh candidates, not just your raw score. When the paper is easier, more students score in the upper ranges, so the same mark earns a worse rank. When the paper is harder, fewer students cross high scores, so the same mark earns a better rank. This is why 580 marks gave rank ~91,000 in 2024 but rank ~4,000 in 2025.

What is a good NEET score to get a government MBBS seat?

A score of 550–580 typically qualifies for government MBBS seats in most state colleges under the All India Quota, based on 2025 NTA data. For AIIMS Delhi or top JIPMER, you need 650 or above. These thresholds shift every year with paper difficulty, so target 580+ as your safe minimum for broad government seat access.
